В Великобритании по традиции признаются три estates of the realm (сословия королевства): the lords spiritual («духовные лорды»), the lords temporal («светские лорды») и the House of Commons (палата общин). Эдмунд Берк (1729—97), политик и философ, назвал прессу четвёртым сословием (the fourth estate) — «более важным, чем все другие». Сейчас термин the fourth estate относится к любой группе, влияющей на политику правительства. -
